Do I need an NRCS LOA to sell electrical products in South Africa?

Last updated: · GoMate 果麦

Short answerMany electrical and electronic products sold in South Africa need a Letter of Authority (LOA) from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) before they can be sold. This mainly covers mains-powered household and office appliances under compulsory specification VC8055. Products with radio or telecom functions (for example Bluetooth or Wi-Fi) may also need ICASA type approval – a separate process. Check both before shipping, because uncertified stock can be stopped or removed from sale.

Who this is for: Sellers of chargers, appliances, power tools, lighting, audio and other electrical or wireless products for the South African market.

Can one product need both?Yes – a mains-powered wireless speaker, for example, may need both.

Steps

  1. Classify the product – is it mains-powered, battery-only, or does it contain a radio module?
  2. Collect test reports – usually IEC/SANS-based safety reports from an accredited lab.
  3. Apply through a South African applicant – the LOA is held by a locally registered entity.
  4. Keep the LOA linked to the exact model – a different model number generally needs its own approval.
  5. Check the plug – products sold with a plug must suit South African sockets.

FAQ

Is an NRCS LOA required to sell on Takealot?

If the product falls under a South African compulsory specification, it needs the LOA to be sold in South Africa, whichever channel it is sold through.

Do battery-only products need an LOA?

Many battery-only items fall outside VC8055, but chargers and mains adapters supplied with them often do not. Check each component.

Is ICASA the same as NRCS?

No. NRCS covers electrical safety; ICASA approves radio and telecommunications equipment. Some products need both.
